Shimer Manor, in the northern part of Pohatcong Township, was a big farm until 1938, when the Shimer family began to sell it for building lots. Until the mid 1940's there were only about 12 houses on the land. Then the area began to grow quickly. The first houses were built on March Blvd., Pennsylvania Ave., and New Jersey Ave., which were the main streets at the time. In the late 1950's, the areas around Pershing and Liggett Avenues were developed.
