Shackletown

Shackletown's distinctive name refers to the shackle bolts made in a local foundry for the Lehigh Valley railroad near Silver Hill. A dubious legend has it that a silver treasure of pure ingots was hidden nearby by Spanish pirates. It is believed to be or have been somewhere in the deep recesses of Butler's Rock, a large formation in an inaccessible part of the Musconetcong Gorge. Shackletown was a small town, with a road leading back through the woods into Bloomsbury. Today the foundry and road are gone, but the sign is here to remind us of the history.
