Hughesville

Map of Hughesville

In 1761, Hugh Hughes, a Welsh judge, bought a large tract of land along the Musconetcong River. In 1765 he had taken possession of the Greenwich Forge, which had been flourishing here since the 1750's. Using iron from the Durham Furnace in Pa., the forge did an extensive business until after the revolution. In the 1800's James M. Long converted the forge to a gristmill, which was eventually consumed by fire.

Hugh Hughes built his home here in the mid 1700's and it has housed many of his descendants. Hughes is documented on the Wm. Faden map of 1774.

Hughesville had been represented on the map as illustrated in 1874. On this Beers map, the present day town of Warren Glen was listed as Hughesville. Note listings of a gristmill and a school on this map.
