Finesville is on the Musconetcong, 1 mile east of its mouth. It is named for Philip and John Fine who came from Germany and settled here. Philip and his sons ran an oil mill, a gristmill, a sawmill, and a store. John built a hotel. The Chelsea Forge, built about 1741, located at Finesville, obtained pig iron from Durham, carried across the Delaware River by ferry. The forge supplied the Continental Army of George Washington with weapons needed to defend Valley Forge. The former Riegel Paper Corp. began its first paper mill in Finesville in a converted gristmill in 1862. When Riegel Paper moved to Riegelsville, the paper mill was used by Taylor Stiles and Co. the manufacturers of knives.
