L. Apgar House
L. Apgar House
On the southwestern corner of Warren County, overlooking the meandering Musconetcong River, sits this stuccoed stone house dating back to the early 19th century. The side-hall housed to the west most likely dates back to around 1825. The treatment of the transomed entry is characteristic of the period. Corner rosettes are part of the outer trim.
An interesting, however unsubstantiated, tale is that a Tory was once tarred and feathered in the front courtyard of the house.
One's first impression is of the commanding recessed raised panel entrance door with the transom lights overhead. Once inside, the door is still secured by an antique spoon latch allowing you entrance into the spacious foyer. Original millwork still surviving in some areas, and random-width plank floors throughout.
The front parlor has remnants of the most elaborate mantel with reeded pilasters and frieze panel, of which are high on the new owners restoration list. The back parlor is a small cupboard with a two-panel door and a dovetailed finger pull drawer under the window.

The open staircase has square balusters, an oval railing and a simply turned newel with a square top and base in the Sheraton style. Wide birth stairs leading up to a substantial landing where you may view the back hills of the Musconetcong Valley before you make your way to the upstairs living quarters.

Additional early details include plastered window recesses with wooden sills, chamfered six panel doors, simply molded chair rail and bead-edged baseboard.
Restoration is still underway, mantels and woodwork being refurbished or replaced as needed. A new pine floor in the original kitchen with a massive walk-in fireplace, and the raised-panel woodwork brings warmth to the kitchen. Up the winding cupboard stairs one finds a cozy loft which is now a bedroom, such as it was when first built.
After languishing in disrepair for several years, the L. Apgar house is finally coming into its own with a family which respects its history and colonial charm. It will soon again represent the talent and fine craftsmanship of the Seigle builders.
