Lime Kilns
Lime Kilns
Here is an example of 19th century lime kilns that once glowed with limestone burning. The top of the kiln, or throat, was filled with alternating limestone and materials that would burn. The kiln was lit and would burn for a week or more. The temperature was controlled by adjusting the air flow in the draft hole located at the bottom of the kiln. The lime would be raked out and sold in bushels for use in colonial construction and farming.
